Alan G. MacDiarmid

Alan Graham MacDiarmid received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2000 jointly with Alan J. Heeger and Hideki Shirakawa for the discovery of metallic polymers i.e. plastics which were capable of conducting electricity. MacDiarmid added bromine to a precursor of polysulfurnitride (the polymer) as in previous experiments addition of bromine had increased the conductivity of materials up to ten folds. Much to the amazement of the three scientists working together, addition of bromine increased the activity of polymer a million times not just ten folds.

Alan MacDiarmid received the Frederic Stanley Kipping Award in Silicon Chemistry 1971,    RSNZ Rutherford Medal 2000 and the Order of New Zealand 2001. MacDiarmid also authored books namely “The Bond to Carbon” (1968), “Organometallic Compounds of the Group IV Elements” (1968, two volumes) and “The Bond to Halogens and Halogenoids” (1972).
