David Craig’s career in theoretical chemistry spans four decades but he is best known for his work in quantum chemistry. He was appointed as the first Head of the University of Sydney’s Chemistry Department in 1952, became Professor or Theoretical Chemistry at University College London in 1956, and held numerous prestigious posts in later years.
In 1985 he accepted the Order of Australia medal for services to science and the Australian Academy of Science now awards an annual David Craig medal for chemistry. A wing of the Australian National University’s Research School of Chemistry is also named in his honour.
