E. Donnall Thomas

Dr. Edward Donall Thomas is an American physician and a Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine 1990. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for his work on the development of cell and organ transplantation. Dr. Thomas shared the award with Joseph Murray. Edward Thomas developed bone marrow transplantation as a treatment for leukemia. Initially the process was successful only if the donor was an identical twin of the patient.

With the development of immunosuppressant drugs to counter organ rejection now many patients are treated for leukemia, aplastic anemia, sickle cell anemia, hurlers syndrome, severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) and Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome as a result of his development in bone marrow transplantation. Dr. Edward Thomas was also awarded the National Medal of Science 1990.
