Günter Blobel

Günter Blobel is a German American biologist. Blobel received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1999 for his work on the discovery of signal peptides. His study on the working of a cell showed that the movement and position of proteins within a cell depend on specific signals. Signal peptides are used to direct newly synthesized proteins to their specific location. Blobel’s research had great impact on the study of hereditary diseases such as cystic fibrosis.

Blobel has a list of honors and awards to his name including NAS Award for Molecular Biology (1978), Gairdner Foundation International Award (1982), Louisa Gross Horwitz Prize (1987) , Lasker Award (1993),  Ciba Drew Award (1995), King Faisal Award (1996) and Mayor’s Award for Excellence in Science and Technology (1997).
