Paul Greengard

Paul Greengard is an American neuroscientist known for his work on the molecular and cellular function of neurons. Paul Greengard, ArvidCarlsson and Eric Kandel were jointly awarded with the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2000 for their discoveries related to the signal transduction mechanisms in the nervous system.  Greengard’s work was based on how the nervous system interacts with dopamine and other neurotransmitters. This led to the discovery of many important medications for the treatment of psychiatric and neurological disorders.

Greengard showed that when dopamine interacts with a receptor on neuron’s cell membrane it causes c-AMP levels to increase in the cell and activates a phosphorylation mechanism. Greengard also received the Dickson Prize 1977 and NAS Award in the Neurosciences 1991.
