Sidney Altman

Sidney Altman is a molecular biologist. He shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1989 with Thomas R Cech for his work on catalytic properties of RNA. In 1983 Altman discovered that RNA can initiate some biological reaction acting as biological catalyst and they are not just carriers of genetic information as they were previously thought.

Altman was honored with Lewis S. Rosenstiel Award for Distinguished Work in Basic Medical Science 1989, National Institutes of Health Merit Award 1989 and Novartis-Drew Award in Biomedical Research 1999.
