Sir Paul M. Nurse

Sir Paul Maxime Nurse is a British geneticist and cell biologist. He is the Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine 2001 with Leland H. Hartwell and R. Timothy Hunt. He was awarded in recognition of his discovery regarding regulation of the cell cycle by cyclin and cyclin dependent kinases.

Paul Nurse discovered the cell cycle i.e. cell division process when he was studying baker’s yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). He discovered a specific gene namely cdc2 which acts as a switch, controlling the cell-cycle event timing. He later researched and found out the corresponding gene in humans which was named cyclin-dependent kinase 1 (cdk1). His findings help know the process of cell division and how cells become cancerous.

Paul Nurse also received the Lasker Award 1998 and Copley Medal 2005.
