Walter Kohn

Walter Kohn is an Austrian Born American Theoretical Physicist. He is the recipient of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1998. Kohn shared the prize with John Pople for his outstanding contribution in the field of study of electronic properties of materials.

Walter Kohn received a war-time bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics from the University of Toronto in 1945. An M.A degree was awarded to him in applied mathematics by University of Toronto in 1946. In 1948 he was awarded a PhD in Physics by Harvard University. From 1950 to 1960 he was involved in teaching at Harvard University, University of Copenhagen and Carnegie Mellon University. Kohn also served as a professor at University of California Santa Barbara. He is currently a Professor Emeritus.

Kohn played an important role in the development of the density-functional theory in 1964 which incorporates quantum mechanics with electronic density. This theory provides a basis to determine bonding in atoms and chemical reactions.

Walter Kohn also has made valuable contributions to semi-conductor physics by developing the Luttinger-Kohn model with Joaquin Mazdak Luttinger. In solid state physics it is used to calculate the effective mass and optical properties of crystalline solids. Kohn received the Oliver Buckley Prize from the American Physical Society in 1960.
