Elias James Corey

Elias Corey is an American Organic Chemist. He won the Noble Prize in Chemistry 1990 for his work on theory and methodology of organic synthesis with particular reference to retrosynthetic analysis. He has developed many synthetic reagents and methods in modern organic chemistry.

Few synthetic reagents developed by Corey include PCC (pyridinium chlorochromate), t-Butyldimethylsilyl ether (TBDMS), Triisopropylsilyl ether (TIPS), and Methoxyethoxymethyl (MEM). Modern Organic Chemistry uses various reaction methods developed by Corey including Corey-Itsuno reduction, Corey–Kim oxidation, Corey-Winter olefin synthesis, Corey-House-Posner-Whitesides reaction, Johnson-Corey-Chaykovsky reaction and Corey-Seebach reaction.

E.J. Corey has received Linus Pauling Award (1973), Franklin Medal (1978), Wolf Prize in Chemistry(1986), National Medal of Science (1988), Japan Prize (1989),  Roger Adams Award (1993), and the Priestley Medal (2004).
