Eric F. Wieschaus

Eric Wieschaus is well known for the identification of 139 genes necessary for a fruit fly’s existence. It includes genes which are important in the formation of muscles, heads, eyes, and other body parts. Much of his research was focused on the genetic mechanisms that control embryonic development (gap genes, pair-rule genes, and segment-polarity genes) in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. He collaborated with Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard for genetic research. Wieschaus received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1995 for his work on embryogenesis in the early Drosophila embryo sharing it with Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard and Edward B. Lewis.
