John Pople

Sir John Anthony Pople was a theoretical chemist. He received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1998 with Walter Kohn. Pople researched in various areas including statistical mechanics of water, theory of nuclear magnetic resonance, semi-empirical theory and Ab Initio Electronic Structure Theory.

John Pople made valuable contributions to the theory of approximate molecular orbital (MO) calculations. He also made developments in the field of computational chemistry and co authored a textbook with David Beveridge on the same topic.Pople is also the pioneer of sophisticated computational methods called as “Ab initio quantum chemistry methods” which are used to model the wave function.

John Pople received the Davy Medal 1988, Wolf Prize in Chemistry 1992, Copley Medal 2002and was honored with Knighthood in 2003.
