Arvid Carlsson

Arvid Carlsson is a Swedish scientist well known for his work on dopamine (neurotransmitter) and its effects in Parkinson’s disease. Carlsson also received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2000 in recognition of his work. He shared the prize with Eric Kandel and Paul Greengard.

Carlsson developed a method for measurement of dopamine levels in the brain tissues. He discovered high levels of dopamine in the basal ganglia. Carlsson also showed that the administration of Reserpine (a drug substance) to animals decreased dopamine levels causing loss of movement controls. This effect was similar to symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. He alleviated the symptoms using L-Dopa (dopamine precursor) which is still the most commonly used treatment in Parkinson’s disease.

Carlsson received the Wolf Prize in Medicine 1979 and Japan Prize 1994.
