Roald Hoffmann

Roald Hoffmann used quantum mechanics to find out the mechanisms of chemical reactions. In 1963 Hoffman introduced the “extended Hückel method”, atheory of molecular orbital which allows calculation of the electronic structure of molecules. In 1965, Hoffman collaborated with Robert Woodward to introduce the “Woodward-Hoffmann rules” which are used as a method to explore the electronic structure of transition states and intermediates in organic reactions. He also introduced the isolobal principle.

Hoffman received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1981. Other awards include ACS Award in Pure Chemistry 1969, Harrison Howe Award 1969, Arthur C. Cope Award 1973, Linus Pauling Medal 1974, William H. Nichols Medal 1981, ACS Award in Inorganic Chemistry 1982, National Medal of Science 1983, NAS Award in Chemical Sciences 1986, Priestley Medal 1990 and the George C. Pimentel Award 1996.
